Heat warning issued for Alberta, including Calgary and Edmonton

It's expected to be another record-breaker in Calgary, as temperatures are expected to hit 28 degrees. The record, 26.7 degrees, was set back in 1897. Tuesday is also reported to be the hottest day of 2016 so far.

Well above average temperatures and a lot of sun is making the spring look at lot more like summer and officials say that the high temperatures are also prompting plenty of warnings.

On Tuesday, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the entire province, saying that the above average temperatures could prove to be dangerous to the health of certain individuals.

Older adults, infants, young children and those with pre-existing illnesses are particularly susceptible to the heat.

If you are planning to go outside, you should drink plenty of liquids, dress for the weather and take breaks in a cool place, out of the sun, every few hours.

A fire advisory has also been issued for the Calgary Forest Area, preventing everything except for campfires.

The Calgary Fire Department says that while there is no ban in place, everyone should be careful with any heat source.

"We're still seeing people throwing their cigarette butts out the window while they are driving or in planter pots if they are smoking outside. Right now, in this heat, things can combust very quickly, spread and grow very quickly,” said Carol Henke, public information officer with the Calgary Fire Department.

Henke says that it is really important to be aware of things, even when you turn on your barbecue. "Don't necessarily leave it unattended and don't have it too close to anything that will burn. That is really important."

But the heat isn’t all bad in the city. 22 days of April were warmer than average and many landscapers are glad for the business.

Andrew Gillis with Good Neighbour Lawn Care says his staff has been mowing lawns for weeks already.

“We’ve been able to get an early start on it and do a lot more than we would normally and we’re also getting an earlier start on regular lawn maintenance.”

Calgarians also took some time on Monday to enjoy a sweet treat and a local shop says business has been booming.

“It’s just been a lot warmer than it has in the past couple of years, so this year we’ve seen lineups a month or two in advance,” said Miu Au, manager of Village Ice Cream.

Garden centres are also seeing a lot of business earlier because of the hot weather.

“Last year, it was a record April for us and we pretty much doubled that this year, so it’s been fantastic,” said Colin Atter with Plantation Garden Centre.

There aren’t any fire bans in Calgary, but a number of areas around the city are under fire advisories.

There is a partial fire ban in Mountain View County and Cochrane is under a fire ban.

The record high for May 3 in Calgary is 26.7 degrees, set back in 1897. The forecasted high is 28.

Tuesday could also be the hottest day of 2016, says CTV Meteorologist Kelsey McEwen.

Temperatures are expected to stay above 20 through to Thursday, when they will gradually fall. Friday is expected to be cooler, at 17 degrees, but that is still above the seasonal average of 14.
