The Veterans Association Food Bank is holding a massive garage sale to support its programs, and to help families of the CFB Wainwright victims. There is a wide variety of clothing, decor, household items, sporting goods and more on sale. Friday was Day 1 of the sale. It continues Saturday from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. at the food bank’s facility on 28th Street NE. Proceeds help support the organization’s many programs -- including revenue from its $5 lunch special, which is a burger or hot dog, chips and a drink that have all been donated. “We are more than a food bank,” said a Veterans Association board member. “We’re veterans. We’ve got the food. Then we give them lodging, and then we try and give them the support for the life. And also, we have the housing program, which assists our veterans from homeless program, so no veteran sleeps on the street. “The whole idea is making people aware that it’s not all gravy out there and our veterans are finding it hard.” The need for the association’s services increases as the city gets into winter. The group expects to distribute about 200 food hampers per month compared to about 150 in the summer. There are no price tags on the garage sale items -- everything is by donation.
