Human remains have been found at Victoria’s former Travellers Inn, where one person was unaccounted for following an Oct. 24 fire. The Victoria Police Department (VicPD) confirmed the discovery Monday, more than a week after the blaze broke out at the property at 760 Queens Ave. VicPD says it is working with the B.C. Coroners Service to determine who the remains belong to. “While that process is underway, we cannot confirm or deny whether they belong to the person who was unaccounted for at the time of the fire,” VicPD said in a release. Investigation at former hotel complete Emergency crews were called to the property shortly before 4 a.m. on Oct. 24. Video taken at 7:44 a.m. and submitted to CTV News shows a large section of the building collapsing while firefighters work to extinguish the flames. Photos taken hours later show smoke billowing from the burning building, with standing sections charred and twisted by fire damage. Road closures were in effect through the morning and early afternoon. Victoria Fire Chief Dan Atkinson said crews declared the fire fully extinguished at about 1 a.m. Oct 25, and investigators would take a methodical approach to removing debris, given the possibility that the missing person could be found in the wreckage. The ‘detailed examination’ took approximately one week to complete. VicPD confirmed Monday that investigative work at the scene is finished, although the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
