A close-knit Brentwood Bay community is coming together to support a young woman facing an uncertain future after a devastating head-on collision in Saanich left her fighting for her life. Miranda Shaffer remains in critical condition at Vancouver General Hospital after the Tuesday night crash on West Saanich Road. Her husband, Josh, was also injured but is expected to recover. According to Miranda’s brother, Marty Milner, another vehicle travelling south crossed the centre line and collided head-on with the couple’s vehicle. Police say the driver of the other vehicle refused a breathalyser test and was arrested at the scene. Miranda was initially taken to Victoria General Hospital before being transferred to Vancouver General Hospital for specialized care. The extent of her injuries has been devastating for her family. Doctors initially feared her spinal cord had been severed, but Milner says surgeons later confirmed it was intact. While that news offered a glimmer of hope, the prognosis remains heartbreaking. Her brother says Miranda is on a ventilator and has suffered multiple serious injuries. Doctors have told the family it is unlikely she will ever walk again or regain motor function in her arms and hands. The timing has made an already unimaginable situation even more difficult. Miranda is turning 23 this Thursday. “She just had such a bright beautiful future ahead of her,” Milner said. As the family focuses on Miranda’s care, the Brentwood Bay community is finding ways to help carry some of the weight. A GoFundMe launched by Milner initially had a goal of $5,000. By Monday afternoon, donations had climbed to nearly $210,000, reflecting an extraordinary outpouring of support. Milner says seeing the community rally around his sister has been deeply moving. “It is so beautiful to see all these people come together just to support Miranda and to be there for her,” he said. “It just goes to show how loved she is and how much people care for her.” That support is also reaching beyond financial contributions. The family owns Shallon Refillery and Naturals in Brentwood Bay, where Miranda works as manager. The storefront has become a visible reminder of the community’s support, with hearts displayed across its front door. Local business owner and family friend Vanessa Lee is among those helping organize volunteers to keep the shop operating while the family spends time in Vancouver. Lee says community members have been eager to find practical ways to help, and a small volunteer team has been assembled to keep the business open two days a week to start. The hope is to expand those hours as more volunteers step forward. For Milner, the response has helped turn an overwhelming situation into something that feels a little less impossible. “We were feeling very hopeless initially but we are full of more hope now,” he said. Miranda faces a long and uncertain road ahead, but her family is not facing it alone. From financial donations to volunteers keeping the family business running, Brentwood Bay is showing just how much a community can rally around its own. Those wishing to support Miranda and Josh can find the GoFundMe fundraiser, titled Miranda & Josh Shaffer, organized by Marty Milner.
