Crews were called to battle a fire at a business in downtown Calgary Tuesday morning. The Calgary Fire Department responded at 8:50 a.m. to the building in the 100 Block of Eighth Avenue S.W. Smoke and flames were already pouring out of the single-story retail business by the time crews arrived. Some people self-evacuated while others sheltered in place. Crews say the fire and smoke was isolated to the source business, but there’s no word yet how extensive the damage is. “The fire did get into the attic area, so we’ve had crews actively working on that,” said Alex Kwan, public information officer with the CFD. “The bulk of the emergency is over.” Kwan said it’s good the fire didn’t extend to any of the other buildings. He said any time they’re called to the downtown core, they come in force. “Just because of the density of building and the number of people, we send an alarm response for downtown buildings. Any time we need more firefighters on scene immediately - this is a standard response downtown.” No injuries have been reported, and the cause is under investigation.
