Electric vehicle (EV) owners will soon have a more convenient way to charge up while going about their shopping this year. Wallbox, a Spanish-based provider of advanced electrical vehicle charging technology, will be setting up four of its Supernova 180kW chargers at CrossIron Mills. The chargers will provide eight fast-charging points for EV owners. The project is in collaboration with the mall’s property manager JLL and SureCharge Corp., a Canadian public charging network operator. “We’re excited to welcome the EV community back to shop and dine at CrossIron Mills as we do our part to support environmentally friendly travel from Calgary to Rocky View and beyond,” said James Moller, JLL’s vice-president of retail property management, in a news release. Officials say the chargers have a maximum output of 180 kW, which can provide up to 100 miles of range in about 10 minutes under ideal conditions. They add CrossIron Mills’ strategic location means it will be an important hub for EV drivers along Alberta’s QEII highway. “We’re thrilled to support SureCharge and CrossIron Mills in bringing reliable, high-performance charging access back to one of Alberta’s busiest retail destinations,” said Ignasi Alastuey, Wallbox’s chief business officer. “Supernova delivers powerful, efficient charging for every EV, helping accelerate the transition to accessible, universal charging across Canada.” This summer, Tesla permanently shut down and removed its own fast charging station from the shopping centre, marking the first time the technology had been permanently decommissioned in Canada. CrossIron Mills said at the time that it was the company’s “independent decision” to remove its infrastructure. It had operated since 2017. Installation of the new Supernova chargers is scheduled to be complete by the end of November, with the site fully operational by the end of December.
