Family identifies Calgary man killed in weekend stabbing outside downtown bar

Family and friends have identified the victim of Saturday's fatal stabbing downtown, describing him as tough and resilient with a happy soul.

A 21-year-old man who died following a violent altercation in a downtown Calgary parking lot is being remembered as a “happy soul” who was “tough and resilient.”​

The victim, identified by family as Jonas Robert Nedd Sutton, was stabbed while outside of a bar in the 700 block of 10 Avenue S.W. just before 2 a.m. on Saturday.

Police say they were called to the area for reports of a large brawl.

Officers arrived to find three people injured.

Sutton was pronounced dead upon arriving at the hospital.

A second person was transported to hospital in stable condition, while the third person has since been release.

A GoFundMe campaign describes Sutton as someone who “always had a smile on his face.”

Police took four people into custody.

Investigators believe numerous people were present when the fight broke out, and say many may have filmed the incident on their cellphones.

“We know there was a lot of people that were out, and from our initial review and what we see, there was a lot of people that were probably began to videotape this incident as it occurred and progressed,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson.

“That’s very important to us because that can help us identify all the people involved.”

An autopsy for Sutton is scheduled for Tuesday.

Calgary police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to call police at 403-266-1234.
