Community gathers at Sport Summit in Airdrie

Terri-Lynn Hamilton moved to Airdrie in 2007 and didn’t know anyone, but she knew where to go to meet people.

“Rugby has always been a sport that once you find find those people that you instantly have a connection with and instantly have a friendship group,” said Hamilton.

She spoke to CTV Calgary from the Airdrie Sports Summit, which took place Sunday at Genesis Place.

The event brought together leaders from all sports, who shared learning, networked and learned more about supports for sport in Airdrie.

Those were the goals in mind for Hamilton, who’s one of the event founders in addition to being the president of the Airdrie Highlanders Rugby Club.

“I am not just passionate about rugby, I am passionate about sport and being active in any way that works for you, regardless of your age, skill level or body type,” she said.

The event included a session with former Humboldt Bronco Ryan Straschnitzki, as well as others on injury prevention, nutrition and athlete development. There was also a trade show featuring businesses that support the sports community.

With Airdrie growing as a city, Hamilton said there are concerns about resources but part of Sunday’s event was to search for solutions.

“You hear the same complaints from every organization about our lack of resources,” she said. “Lack of fields, lack of this -- but the city is aware of that, and we can’t change that today, but there are things we can do today together to address some of our problems and our pinch points. So that is what today is about.”
