As work to complete the expansion and transformation of Calgary’s main performing arts centre continues, we now know the name of a new theatre set to open inside the building. The Werklund Centre, formerly known as Arts Commons, is undergoing a massive makeover, including the creation of a new 200-seat theatre. On Thursday, officials announced the space will be called the McCann Family Studio Theatre. “Through a $4 million gift from Rodney (Rod) J. McCann, Karen McCann, and their immediate family, the naming recognizes the family’s longstanding commitment to Calgary’s arts community through their leadership, volunteerism and philanthropic investment in arts spaces and programming,” said a release. Officials say the McCann Family Studio Theatre addresses the need for professionally equipped, flexible performance venues. “It will cater to local artists and creators, providing an adaptable venue that supports culturally diverse and community-based programming, emerging artists, arts education and experimental work,” said a release. Rod McCann says his family is honoured to support the project, and hopes it will have a lasting impact of Calgary. “We believe in the power of the arts to inspire, connect and strengthen communities. Our hope is that this theatre will provide opportunities for artists and audiences alike and help foster creativity for many years to come.” Work to expand and revamp the Werklund Centre began last year, and is on track to be completed in 2028.
