Calgary’s downtown free fare zone review sees online survey launched

The City of Calgary has launched a survey on Calgary Transit’s downtown free fare zone as part of a review looking at the value of the initiative.

The free fare zone is a 2.5-kilometre stretch along the Seventh Avenue transit corridor where no fee is needed to ride the CTrain.

It’s been in place since 1979; first with busses, then the CTrain after it became operational in 1981.

The free fare zone was created to make it easier for people who work or live downtown to get around.

However, the city has grown and changed greatly since then, as have people’s travel habits.

So, from now until March 8, the city is inviting transit customers to complete an online survey about the zone.

Data from the survey will be used to report on the value of the free fare zone and make recommendations for future fare options in the area.
