It’s been years in the making, but the Sea Cadets in Barrie have officially broke ground on their new home along Barrie’s waterfront. The new building will be a 600 square metre facility to the northwest side of the General John Hayter Southshore Community Centre. Diane Chislett, branch president of the Navy League of Canada said its been a journey to get to this point but well worth the wait. “We’ve been on the master waterfront plan for. I don’t know how long,” said Chislett. “So to have this actually happen, to actually move the Earth, to actually do it, we are thrilled.” The new facility will feature a wood framed structure, indoor and outdoor boat storage areas, administrative rooms, barrier free washrooms, and an accessible path to the water. “It’s going to create a much more safer environment for young people as they launch those 12ft sailboats and learn to sail,” said Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall. “It certainly is a patriotic day for our country because these are, young people that are being trained to potentially go and serve our country.” Construction is scheduled to begin in early June of this year
