Calgary-Glenmore MLA Nagwan Al-Guneid says she will not seek re-election in the next provincial vote. Al-Guneid, who was elected in 2023, said the decision came after “a great deal of thought and reflection,” adding she plans to continue serving Albertans in a different capacity. The NDP MLA, who serves as shadow minister for energy and minerals, entered politics after about 15 years working in the energy sector. She won the Calgary-Glenmore riding in 2023, flipping a constituency long considered a conservative stronghold, defeating United Conservative Party candidate Whitney Issik. In a letter to constituents, Al-Guneid said representing the riding has been “the honour of a lifetime” and described her time in office as one of the most humbling experiences of her life. NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi thanked Al-Guneid for her contributions, saying her expertise helped shape the party’s plans for Alberta’s energy sector and economic future. Al-Guneid said she will serve out the remainder of her term.
