U.S. President Donald Trump has congratulated B.C.’s premier-designate on the Conservative party’s election win. Trump posted to Truth Social Tuesday, sharing an article about the decisive defeat of the B.C. NDP in Saturday’s snap election. “Congratulations to Lorne Doerkson on his Big Victory. Conservatives are moving strong in Canada! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” the post said. The B.C. Conservative party won a commanding majority and is set to form government for the first time in nearly a century. David Eby, who was ousted as premier and resigned as the B.C. NDP’s leader, invoked Trump and the trade war when he called the controversial early election in September. Eby characterized his Conservative opponents as overly sympathetic to Trump and often accused the party of trying to import “MAGA-style” politics by focusing on culture war issues and offering a haven for candidates with extreme views. This is the second time the results out of British Columbia have prompted a post from the U.S. president, who shared a story about the win—without offering comment—Sunday. That day, Doerkson was asked what he thought about the apparent show of support from Trump. The premier-designate said he does not see himself as a Trump ally, and that his loyalty lies with the province and its people. “I assure you that my commitment, my dedication, is to British Columbia,” he said.
