Multiple investigations are underway after Calgary fire crews responded to five fires around the city in the past 24 hours. In the community of Pineridge, crews found a home under renovation and unoccupied with fire burning in the ceiling and attic, which they were able to quickly knock down. No one was injured and the damage was contained to a single home. In Silver Springs, a fire started on the deck in the back of the house. Crews were able to stretch a hose to reach the backyard and put out the fire before it reached the home. One senior occupant was helped out while everyone else inside was able to get out on their own. No one was injured and the damage was limited to a single home. At about midnight, crews responded to a report of a basement fire in the community of Martindale. Crews were able to quickly put down the fire. Two occupants were assessed by EMS. The fire was limited to contents in the basement and didn’t spread to the structure itself. After shift change in the morning, crews responded to a report of a fire in the community of Westgate. A neighbour noticed smoke coming from the house next door and called 911. Crews arrived to discover a fire inside a walk-in closet inside a single-storey home. No one was home at the time and no one was injured. The fire was contained to a single room. The fifth fire was in a home in Bowness, where crews discovered heavy smoke coming from the rear roof area. A hose was stretched to the backyard as heat from the fire broke a window. Crews were able to apply water through the broken window to knock down the fire inside before entering through the front door and putting out the rest of the fire. At that point, firefighters noted that flames and heat had extended into the ceiling/roof and started overhaul operations. The home had gone through a number of renovation and crews had to break through multiple layers of ceiling and false roof to make sure the fire was out. No one was home at the time. The fire was contained to a single home. The causes of all five fires are under investigation.
