Alberta judge upholds human rights decision regarding Calgary’s Webber Academy

An Alberta court has upheld the decision against Calgary's Webber Academy which found the institution discriminated against two Muslim students over their right to pray at the school.

An Alberta judge has upheld the decision against a Calgary private school that discriminated against two Muslim students over their right to pray on school grounds.

In 2015, the Human Rights Commission fined Webber Academy $26,000 for discriminating against the pair of boys.

The young men said that praying is mandatory in their Sunni religion and they were told that they weren’t allowed to pray anywhere on school property.

They were then forced to observe their faith in secret, going outside to pray.

During the appeal, school officials said the students’ parents were told Webber Academy was non-denominational and there was no space for praying inside.

The judge ruled that the tribunal made no errors in the decision and the damages awarded were reasonable.
