The Alberta government has extended the application deadline for its $100 energy rebate to Oct. 31. The province says the extension gives residents who have not yet applied an additional 31 days to submit their applications. The rebate program was launched in July, with the government saying it would help eligible residents cover everyday costs and return increased revenues from high oil prices to Albertans. Eligible households with two adults can receive up to $200 in flexible relief that can be used for any household expense, according to the province. The government says more than 1.45 million Albertans have applied for and received the rebate since the program launched. “By extending the deadline, we are giving more families the time they need to apply and receive real relief,” said Treasury Board and Finance Minister Jason Nixon in a news release. The program faced criticism following its launch, with some residents raising concerns about the application process and privacy. The government says it has since added a third payment option to the online system to make it faster for more Albertans to complete their applications. The province has also removed the provincial fuel tax starting Oct. 1, a move it says will save Albertans 13 cents per litre.
