Airdrie RCMP stop driver travelling 178 km/h north of Airdrie with unbuckled kids in back

Airdrie RCMP say a driver was caught travelling 178 km/h on the QEII Highway over the weekend while two children sat in the back without seatbelts on.

The speeder was spotted north of Airdrie on Sunday morning, RCMP say.

Mounties pulled the driver over and issued three summonses and a March court appearance.

“Excessive speed combined with the failure to properly use seatbelts significantly increases the risk of serious injury or death,” Airdrie RCMP said in a news release. “This type of driving behaviour is dangerous and unacceptable.”

Alberta RCMP have responded to 19 fatal crashes so far in 2026, resulting in 21 deaths.
