Advisory on Bow, Elbow rivers lifted as flow rates decrease

It’s safe for Calgarians to venture back out onto the Bow and Elbow Rivers as the city’s first responders have now lifted an advisory for high flow rates.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says improved conditions on both rivers led to the decision, but anyone heading out into the water should still exercise caution.

“While there may still be some reduced visibility and debris, conditions are expected to gradually improve to typical summer conditions however, and the water temperature remains cold,” the CFD said in a news release.

“The public can resume normal activities on and around our city’s rivers but are encouraged to continue to use caution and practice safety.”

On June 29, the CFD issued the advisory after heavy rainfall and rising water levels created dangerous conditions on both rivers.

Those conditions made hazards difficult to see and strong winds from storms led to more debris like branches and trees in the water.

The high flow rate also increased the risk of boaters getting pinned against obstacles such as bridge pillars.

The city says flow rates are closely monitored throughout the year.

While the lack of an advisory means that Calgarians can venture into the water, there is still some risk.

“Conditions are unpredictable and can change without warning, such as when we experience sudden thunderstorms that result in rapid, short duration increases in flow,” the CFD said.

Officials say river users should wear lifejackets, supervise children and keep them within an arm’s reach and only use proper watercraft with a boat safety kit.

The CFD urges residents avoid tying boats together and wearing ankle leashes while on the river.
