5 injured in rollover at Deerfoot and Memorial

5 Calgary youth were injured in a single-vehicle rollover early Saturday morning on Deerfoot Trail at Memorial Drive.

Five people were injured in a single vehicle rollover early Saturday morning on Memorial Drive.

Police said they responded to reports at 4 a.m. of the rollover at Deerfoot Trail and Memorial Drive S.E. of a 2011 Toyota RAVE4 with five youth inside travelling north at high speed as they approached Memorial Drive S.E.

It was snowing at the time and the road was slippery.

Police say the driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road and hit a barrier, causing the car to spin.

One passenger, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle.

The car then crossed all northbound lanes, hit the base of the bridge on the side of the road and came to a rest beside the highway.

The female passenger thrown from the vehicle suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to Foothills Medical Centre with a second passenger who was also in serious condition.

EMS confirmed that three others were transported to Alberta Children’s Hospital, one in serious condition and two in stable condition.

Police say speed and weather conditions are believed to be factors in the collision.

Northbound Deerfoot Trail was closed for a few hours before reopening.
