2 backcountry hikers deceased, third still missing and presumed dead

RCMP say they were alerted by a GPS SOS on Monday that three hikers fell over Meachen Creek Falls.

Kimberley RCMP say two people have died while on a hiking trip at Meachen Creek Falls on Labour Day.

Officials say on Sept. 1, first responders were alerted to an incident in the area that indicated three hikers had gone over the falls.

“Frontline officers responded and located a 68-year-old woman deceased approximately halfway down the falls,” RCMP said in a news release.

Police have since located the body of another hiker, a 35-year-old woman. Work is underway to recover her remains.

The third hiker, a 35-year-old man, has not been found, but police say he is presumed dead.

None of the deaths are believed to be suspicious, but the investigation remains ongoing.
