TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down nearly 300 points in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets also fell as the price of oil topped US$100 per barrel. The October crude oil contract was up US$3.98 at US$100.03 per barrel. The S&P/TSX composite index was down 289.79 points at 35,616.77. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 255.35 points at 52,125.31. The S&P 500 index was down 36.10 points at 7,600.26, while the Nasdaq composite was down 121.91 points at 26,131.43. The Canadian dollar traded for 72.38 cents US compared with 72.47 cents US on Wednesday.
