S&P/TSX composite down nearly 100 points, U.S. stock markets also lower

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down nearly 100 points in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the base metals sector, while U.S. markets also moved lower.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 98.77 points at 35,113.55.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 236.62 points at 52,819.29. The S&P 500 index was down 52.38 points at 7,485.05, while the Nasdaq composite was down 371.90 points at 25,749.26.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.45 cents US compared with 70.33 cents US on Monday.

The August crude oil contract was up US$1.73 at US$70.28 per barrel.

The August gold contract was down US$3.00 at US$4,164.50 an ounce.
