TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down more than 300 points in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the base metal, technology and financial sectors, while U.S. stock markets also fell. The S&P/TSX composite index was down 304.92 points at 36,363.00. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 137.41 points at 53,322.37. The S&P 500 index was down 49.70 points at 7,695.36, while the Nasdaq composite was down 340.47 points at 26,304.44. The Canadian dollar traded for 71.99 cents US compared with 72.12 cents US on Monday. The October crude oil contract was up 45 cents US at US$84.19 per barrel.
