York police see changing trend in grow op locations

In York Region, officers say they're seeing some changing trends with drug problems.

Officers updated the police services board today on how they're fighting problems with illegal and legal drugs, as well as drug trafficking.

One thing they say they're finding is there are fewer marijuana grow operations in York Region.   However, they admit, this could mean criminals are just getting smarter about hiding them.

“We have seen though smaller towns, smaller areas that are outside York Region, become meccas,” says Insp. Keith Merith. “I suppose you can use that word, for indoor marijuana grows and that's simply because  only here in York Region we have had vast experience with grow ops and we know how to manage them, we know how to dismantle them.”

Police today issued a message to the public:  if you think you know about a marijuana grow operation, call them. They say public tips are playing a big role in the success they've had so far.
