Winter weather travel advisory in effect with up to 10cm of snow expected

Lake-effect snow and gusty winds created slippery roads and reduced visibility for drivers heading out early Thursday morning.

Environment Canada issued a winter weather travel advisory for several areas including Barrie, Collingwood, Owen Sound, Shelburne, Orangeville, and the surrounding communities.

The agency said up to 10 centimetres of snow could fall by the time the system tapers off near noon.

Drivers are urged to slow down and leave extra space between vehicles, as officials warn visibility can drop quickly in bursts of heavy snow.

Following the blasts of wintry weather earlier this week, Barrie police issued a reminder to motorists on social media, stating, “now is the time to make sure your car is ready for the upcoming winter. Be sure that you have your snow brush, extra washer fluid and get your snow tires on.”

Environment Canada expects the weather to improve by midday.
