Winter curbside collection tips for residents

As winter settles in, residents are reminded to take extra care with their curbside collection carts to ensure smooth and safe pickup.

When shovelling snow, the City asks residents to be sure to clear a flat area beside or at the end of the driveway where you can place your carts.

Officials say it’s important to keep the carts clear of paths used by snow removal equipment to avoid any interference. For better visibility, place your carts on the right side of your driveway or boulevard when facing the street. The City says this makes it easier for collectors to spot them in winter conditions.

“Ensure lids are closed as items are susceptible to being frozen to your cart or being blown away,” the City states.

Lastly, avoid placing your carts on, behind, or within two feet (0.6 metres) of snowbanks, since trucks won’t be able to collect them if the automated arms cannot reach the carts.

If snow removal equipment hits your carts and spills contents, the City says it’s the resident’s responsibility to clean up. For damaged carts, staff say to contact Emterra at [e-mail] or call 1-833-253-8207.

To prevent freezing and snow buildup, the City says to try to store your carts in a dry area during the week.

Officials noted a useful tip is to line your organics cart with a fibre liner, like paper, to stop contents from sticking to the cart.
