Trucks with defective tires and missing lights stopped by OPP on Highway 400

Two commercial trucks were removed from the roads on Monday evening after provincial police officers spotted major safety violations.

According to Huronia West OPP, the first incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Highway 400 in Springwater Township, when officers stopped a truck and trailer traveling southbound.

Police say the trailer’s tire was found to be completely shredded. The truck was removed from service, and the Innisfil-based company was charged with failing to ensure performance standards were met, operating a commercial vehicle with a major defect, and having improper tires on a drawn vehicle.

The driver, from Windsor, was also charged with operating a commercial vehicle with a major defect and using improper tires.

Later that evening, police say the same officer spotted a dump truck towing a trailer with no functioning lights.

The vehicle was taken out of service and towed, and the company from Brampton faced multiple charges, including driving without proper rear lights, failing to have proper clearance, side marker, and identification lamps, operating a defective commercial vehicle, and failing to equip or provide an electronic logging device (ELD) as required.

The driver, from Caledon, was charged with driving after exceeding 14 hours on duty, failing to carry or surrender a complete ELD packet, operating a defective commercial vehicle, and a range of lighting violations, including no red light on the rear of the trailer and missing side and identification lamps.

Police acknowledged that the vast majority of commercial motor vehicle operators comply with safety regulations and thanked them for their diligence.

The OPP reminds all commercial vehicle operators to ensure their vehicles meet safety standards, maintain proper documentation, and comply with hours-of-service rules to help prevent accidents and keep roadways safe.
