Tension over fireworks ban after Canada Day incident in Wasaga Beach

Despite a town-wide ban on the private use of fireworks, Canada Day in Wasaga Beach saw youths lighting up the night sky during the town’s official display.

A new bylaw banning the sale and private use of fireworks in Wasaga Beach sparked controversy and frustration among residents and business owners. Town council voted in April to implement the ban, sharing concerns about safety, noise, and community well-being.

On July 1, provincial police told CTV News that several young people were spotted setting off fireworks along the beach, including possible roman candles. “During the fireworks display, we began receiving calls advising that youths were lighting their own fireworks on the beach,” said Huronia West OPP Const. Mike Osborne to CTV News on Wednesday.

Police say beachgoers informed officers that the fireworks were reportedly aimed at others too. Officers from zones 3 and 4 were called in to patrol Beach Area 1 and worked to keep the situation under control.

The youths were cooperative with police. No injuries were reported and officers say the group eventually cleared the area after midnight.

New Bylaw

According to the town, fireworks can only be set off on private property with the owner’s consent. Public displays require a permit from the Fire Chief. Setting off fireworks in public spaces like beaches, parks, or streets is prohibited.

The bylaw does not eliminate all displays. The Town of Wasaga Beach confirmed it will continue to host professional fireworks shows during select municipal events, like Tuesday’s Canada Day celebrations and the summer series.

In an April statement to CTV News, Mayor Brian Smith defended the bylaw, calling it a step toward improving public safety.

“There have been some troubling instances, over the years, of bad actors using poor judgement and setting off fireworks near large gatherings of families and children close to town-organized festivals and events,” Smith wrote in April. “Council is taking action to ensure our community remains a safe, fun place to raise a family, visit and play in the sun.”

Town officials say they’re taking an education-first approach before moving to enforcement. However, questions remain about how effective the bylaw is especially since locals continue to get their hands on fireworks and roman candles through neighbouring communities.

Despite the mixed opinions, safety regulations, and residents still finding ways to light them, officials say the bylaw will continue to be enforced, particularly during busy holiday weekends.
