Simcoe County high school students participate in Model UN debate

High school students from Simcoe County gathered to present and debate issues happening globally.

Students from around Simcoe Country participated at the 36th annual model UN debate.

The debate took place at the Simcoe County District School Board with 170 students from nine different high schools.

Students take on various roles of delegates from other countries around the world and debate current global issues.

Grade 11 student Jenny Le said it’s a great opportunity to meet other students. “It is nerve wracking I will say that,” said Le. “It’s been fun though. I like meeting new people.”

Le said the experience has pushed her out of her comfort zone with the larger crowds and made her approach the day with an open mind. “I feel like it prepares us for the future almost, if we do want to go into that kind of route where we’re going to have to meet new people constantly.”

Robert Howatson, a high school teacher at Banting Memorial said the model UN debate is a good test for students.

“The event is for students to hone their skills, demonstrate their learning, learn a little bit about the world and the big issues that are happening today and have a little bit fun,” said Howatson.

Howatson was impressed by how well the students represented their countries. “Students spent a lot of time preparing, they’re all well researched, very well spoken and it’s a very thoughtful debate going on today.”

The Model UN debate is an annual event that takes place at the Simcoe County District School Board.
