Quick-thinking officer earns Ontario’s top bravery medal for actions during violent incident

It was a proud moment for the Owen Sound Police Service this week, as one of their own was formally recognized for an act of courage that officers say could easily have ended much differently.

Sgt. Josh Gurney was awarded the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery — one of the highest honours a police officer can receive in the province — for his actions during a high-risk incident on Sept. 24, 2023.

The award presented on Monday acknowledged the way Gurney handled a call. Officers responded to a situation involving two people who had been stabbed and suspects who were still armed. According to the service, the unfolding scene required quick thinking, calm decision-making and a willingness to step directly into harm’s way.

“Sgt. Gurney placed himself between a suspect and civilian witnesses, prioritizing their safety while using tactical communication and spatial control to avoid the use of deadly force,” the service explained.

Instead of using deadly force, the Owen Sound service said he relied gain control of the situation with an approach that allowed officers to switch to non-lethal tools to subdue the suspect safely.

But the situation wasn’t over.

As soon as the first arrest was made, police said Gurney realized a second suspect had fled. The service noted Gurney “took initiative to locate and arrest that individual, preventing further harm.”

Throughout the incident, police say he kept medical attention for the two victims top of mind, helping ensure they received care as soon as possible.

“These actions exemplify the highest standards of policing and reflect Sgt. Gurney’s commitment to public safety. We are proud to see his bravery recognized at the provincial level,” the service added.

The Ontario Medal for Police Bravery recognizes officers who show exceptional courage in the face of danger. This year, Sgt. Gurney is among the select few honoured for going above and beyond.
