CTV Barrie: Officer who shot Minty testifies The officer who shot Douglas Minty in 2009 took the stand today at the inquest into the Elmvale man's death. Katherine Ward has the latest.

The police officer who shot Douglas Minty outside his Elmvale home in 2009 testified today at the coroner's inquest into Minty's death.

Const. Jeff Seguin took the stand to give his version of events the night Minty died. He was the officer who was first on scene and the one who shot Minty five times.

There was a lot of discussion about the knife that was recovered from the scene.

Seguin said Mr. Minty came towards him with an open knife and that he was slashing it in the air.

Seguin said he “ran out of space” between him and Minty and that's why he fired his gun. Seguin said Minty then closed the knife after the shots were fired. But when speaking with the family, they question whether Minty could have done that.

But before the knife was discussed further, proceedings were cut short. During Julian Roy's cross examination on behalf of the Minty family, Roy collapsed in the middle of asking Seguin a question.

Roy was taken to hospital and it's expected the inquest will resume tomorrow.

Seguin still has to finish his testimony, and lawyers have to make their submissions for the jury to consider.
