‘Not a harmless prank:’ Road signs stolen and vandalized sparks criminal investigation

Provincial police are investigating after they say several road signs were stolen or damaged throughout Amaranth Township.

Police say the Township notified them about multiple road signs, including stop signs, being tampered with over the past week.

OPP has a strong message for anyone involved: “Removing or tampering with these signs is not only a criminal offence, but it also puts every road user at serious risk.”

“This isn’t a harmless prank. Stealing a road sign can be the difference between life and death. No sign is worth putting on your garage wall or cashing in for scrap metal. Have some respect for your community,” police added.

Stop signs with the word ‘Don’t’ spray painted on them were found in several areas, along with some signs removed from their locations and tossed in fields.

Dufferin OPP urges anyone with information or surveillance video that could help identify those involved to contact the service.

“Let’s work together to stop this before someone gets seriously hurt,” police concluded.
