Motorists responsible to completely remove snow and ice from vehicles or face fines

As the snow continues to fall and blanket the region, motorists are reminded to take a little extra time to completely clear snow and ice from their vehicles before hitting the roads.

On Monday, police advised staying off the roads if possible, with snow squall warnings in place creating near-zero visibility in some areas.

But for those who must head out, removing snow and ice from your vehicle is “crucial for safe winter driving,” police state, adding it can prevent accidents and helps to keep the roads clear.

“Be a better driver,” OPP stated in a post on social media Monday.

Drivers are responsible to clear their vehicle’s windows under the Highway Traffic Act, including the front, rear, and side windows. Motorists caught with obstructed views could be fined and face charges for not properly clearing their vehicles of snow and ice.

Snow and ice on a vehicle are considered safety hazards because of the risk they pose - snow and ice could potentially fly into another vehicle’s path. Police also advise clearing off the vehicle’s roof to avoid damage or injury to others.
