Motorcyclist performing stunts on Highway 400 caught on video, OPP investigating

OPP are searching for a motorcycle driver captured performing dangerous stunts while riding along Highway 400 in Barrie.

Police are looking for a motorcyclist caught on video performing dangerous stunts along Highway 400 northbound through Barrie, Ont., over the weekend.

The video, taken by a passing driver early Sunday evening, shows the rider sitting sideways, kicking both feet in the air off the side of the bike, riding along the shoulder, and even standing on the seat while holding the handlebars — all while travelling at highway speeds.

Ontario Provincial Police say officers received a traffic complaint about the incident, but the motorcyclist was gone by the time officers arrived. Barrie police were also alerted to watch for the rider, though the individual has not been located.

“It is evident that the operator of this motorcycle needs to be identified and dealt with accordingly. His behaviour put the lives of many at risk and although he may have felt he was entertaining, his reckless regard for those he shared the highway with could have been deadly.”

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt called the motorcyclist “absolutely ridiculous.”

“Is he getting ready for the circus or the ballet?” Schmidt asked, pointing out how the rider was in no position to respond in an emergency or control the vehicle.

“If he’s looking for attention, that’s not the way to get it,” the OPP sergeant emphasized.

Police stress that stunt driving is a serious offence in Ontario.

“Drivers charged face an immediate 30-day licence suspension, a 14-day vehicle impoundment, and a mandatory court appearance,” said OPP Const. Joe Brisebois.

If convicted, penalties can include fines of up to $10,000, six demerit points, licence suspensions ranging from one year to permanent, possible jail time, and mandatory driver training, Brisebois added.

Stunt driving covers a range of reckless actions such as street racing, popping wheelies, drifting, and performing tricks while operating a vehicle. Police say these behaviours endanger not only the rider, but everyone else on the road.

The OPP is asking anyone who witnesses dangerous driving to call 911 immediately, noting quick reporting can help prevent tragedies and keep highways safe.
