Local police recognize female officers, encourage more women to join law enforcement

Police services across central Ontario recognized the contributions of female officers on Saturday’s International Women’s Day, and some made it a point to encourage more women to consider careers in policing.

In a social media post, York Regional Police (YRP) highlighted the 50-year anniversary of Joy Dennison becoming their first female officer on January 3, 1975, stating that it paved the way for women in policing.

YRP recognized the service of their female officers in the half-century since then, from front line officers to senior leaders, including Cecile Hammond, YRP’s first-ever female deputy chief.

“I’m proud to lead and work in an organization where women are encouraged and empowered to break down barriers,” said Jim MacSween, chief of YRP, in a media release. “York Regional Police is in a better position now than ever before to support women in all branches of the organization, from the frontline all the way to the executive office.”

According to YRP, women account for roughly 21 per cent of their police officers, with many working in civilian professional positions.

“We remain committed to driving that number upwards, because we know that our police service becomes stronger the more closely it reflects our community,” added MacSween. “We will keep investing in programs that make our workplace more equitable, in turn making this career a more viable and desirable one for all women.”

YRP say they invest in recruitment initiatives to increase the amount of female officers hired, including women-specific employment sessions, training, recruitment and mentorship programs.

OSPS hopes to hire more female officers

In Owen Sound, Craig Ambrose, chief of the Owen Sound Police Service (OSPS), expressed his gratitude for the dedication and professionalism of their female officers.

“Today, we honour the women who serve our community with integrity, resilience, and compassion,” said Ambrose, in a media release. “Their contributions make a meaningful impact, and we are proud to stand alongside them in creating a safer, more inclusive society.”

The OSPS is also hoping for more women to become police officers, stating that they are actively seeking talented and passionate candidates to join their team in various positions.

The OSPS encourages women interested in policing to connect with their female officers or to reach out to their human resources department for more information.
