Lions Park Hockey Rink opens for the season: What to know

Grab your skates, helmets and gear, Lions Park Hockey Rink in Newmarket is now open for the season.

On Thursday, the Town announced the outdoor rink located on D’Arcy Street had opened to the public.

But there are a few things to know before you go.

The rink will be open Monday to Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Shinny sessions are organized by age groups to ensure everyone can play safely and enjoyably, the Town notes.

Weekday shinny hours are as follows:

• Ages 13 and under: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
• Ages 12 to 15: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
• Ages 16 and older: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Weekend shinny sessions include family time and various age groups:

• Family shinny: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
• Ages 13 and under: 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and again 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
• Ages 12 to 15: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and again 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
• Ages 16 and older: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Players are strongly encouraged to wear CSA-approved helmets and equipment. The Town says parents or guardians should remain on site to supervise children ages nine and under.

“We welcome players of all skill levels. Work together to support each other by adjusting your pace and play style to ensure everyone can enjoy the game at their own level of comfort,” the Town adds.
