Lane closure along one of Barrie’s busiest corridors to cause traffic delays

Motorists heading east along Dunlop Street near Highway 400 need to remember short-term pain brings long-term gain - and also perhaps plan an alternate route this week.

Starting at 6 a.m. on Monday, a single eastbound lane will be closed between the highway and Anne Street for construction crews.

The Ministry of Transportation says the closure is needed for workers to continue lane widening and storm sewer improvements. The work is part of a larger infrastructure project in Barrie that includes the replacement of the Dunlop Street bridge over Highway 400.

Traffic will be able to get through the area, but motorists should expect delays during peak times. The City and the ministry encourage motorists to give themselves extra travel time, plan alternate routes if possible, and watch for workers in the construction zone.

The bridge replacement project is designed to ultimately improve traffic flow through the typically heavily congested area. Work on the area has been ongoing for several months, with periodic lane closures already in place to allow for construction.

Barring any weather delays, the latest lane closure is expected to wrap up by the end of the day Friday, with the entire bridge project anticipated to be completed by 2028.
