Lehman not planning to run for Liberal leadership, citing family and Muskoka commitments

The District of Muskoka Chair, Jeff Lehman, says he will not seek the leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party (OLP), citing family priorities and commitments to his current role.

In a social media post on Monday, Lehman said he has been “honoured by the number of calls and messages I’ve received encouraging me to run.” He expressed a “deep love” for Ontario and “belief that there is so much good work to do,” but said he must put his family first as they navigate his daughter, Nova’s, health journey.

Lehman also highlighted his intent to stick with the promise he made to the residents of Muskoka.

“I still believe public service is one of the highest callings, despite the many challenges that come with it,” Lehman stated. “Ultimately, public office at any level is a wonderful opportunity to try to leave the place just a little better for our kids, that’s the most meaningful work possible.”

Lehman, former longtime mayor of Barrie, has been a municipal leader for nearly 20 years. He ran as the liberal candidate in Barrie-Springwater-Oro-medonte during the 2022 election and was narrowly defeated by conservative incumbent Doug Downey. In December of that year, Lehman shifted into the role of Chair of the District of Muskoka.

The Ontario Liberal Party is preparing for a new leadership race following Bonnie Crombie’s decision to step down. Earlier this month, Crombie announced she would resign once a successor was chosen after receiving just 57 per cent support in a party leadership review, a result seen as weak.

No date has been set for the leadership contest.

“It’s my hope OLP will choose a format for the leadership race that allows many candidates and the widest possible participation,” Lehman wrote. “Many good people are looking at the race and I encourage them all to seek the opportunity to serve.”
