How distraction thefts work and what police say you can do to avoid them

Police are warning residents to be on alert after several reports of thieves using clever tricks to divert attention and steal valuables in Innisfil and Bradford. Police say this type of crime is called ‘distraction theft.’

According to South Simcoe police, these incidents often involve offenders working in pairs or small groups who approach people in public places, parking lots or even at their own front doors.

While one person engages the victim in conversation, another quietly snatches personal items like wallets, phones, or jewelry.

Tactics vary, but they tend to play on empathy or surprise.

Police say offenders have been known to spill something on a person, ask for directions, share a sad story, or offer a gift for “good luck.”

In some cases, authorities say they pretend to need help or claim there’s a problem with the victim’s vehicle — all to create a distraction long enough to grab what they’re after.

While anyone can be targeted, police note that seniors, people who appear trusting, and those wearing visible jewelry are especially vulnerable.

Police are reminding residents not to follow suspects if they become victims. Instead, they say they should call police immediately and note as many details as possible, including descriptions of people, vehicles, and any unique identifying features.

To reduce risk, police suggest keeping valuables out of sight and zipped up, staying alert in crowded areas, and being cautious if approached by strangers who seem overly friendly or engaging. Avoid placing bags on the back of chairs or valuables on tables in public spaces.
