Barrie police are offering a series of safety reminders as residents gear up for holiday travel, busy shopping days and winter road conditions. Const. Jackie Parkin from the Community Safety and Wellbeing Unit spoke with several officers in various units to gather practical advice to help keep the community safe during the season. Snow Tires Deputy Chief Rob Burke said winter tires make a significant difference as temperatures drop and roads become slippery, calling them “an excellent way to get around safely in the winter.” “Always have snow tires, in fact the entire Barrie Police Service fleet has snow tires,” Burke shared. Scams Police are also encouraging people to “Take 5, Tell 2” before giving out personal information. The service says residents should take five minutes to think before sharing details with someone they don’t know and consider talking to two trusted people for a second opinion. “Two heads are better than one,” police said. Distracted Driving With the holiday hustle in full swing, the service is urging drivers to avoid distractions behind the wheel. Police say calls and texts should wait until the vehicle is parked safely. “So, put down your cell phone,” police shared. “Put it somewhere, maybe just on your console or something like that, and keep your eyes on the roadway.” Make a Plan Anyone planning to drink is asked to arrange a safe ride before heading out. Police warn that impaired driving, whether by alcohol or drugs, continues to put lives at risk. “During this festive season, we’re all going somewhere to see family, friends and loved ones,” Chief Rich Johnston said. “Before you sit behind the wheel of a motor vehicle of any type, take the time to realize, ‘should you be sitting there?’ Please don’t drink and drive.” Auto Theft Parkins concluded with a reminder for vehicle owners to lock their vehicle doors and consider installing an ignition immobilizer to help prevent theft. The Community Safety and Wellbeing officer said taking small precautions can make a difference. “It will help deter thieves from being able to steal your vehicle from your driveway,” Parkins finished.
