Heavy snowfall sparks call for residents to clear hydrants

Residents are asked to lend a hand after this week’s major storm buried many neighbourhood fire hydrants under deep snow.

Parts of Central Ontario received between 30 and 50 centimetres of snow this week since the storm began Wednesday, with snowfall finally easing Friday morning.

Officials in Springwater Township say hydrants across the community are now partially or fully covered, which could slow firefighters during an emergency.

The Township says easy access to hydrants is critical because “every second counts” when crews arrive at a fire. Snowbanks, ice buildup and blocked routes can add precious minutes to their response time.

Springwater is encouraging residents to take a few simple steps to help keep things safe.

The Township asks people to clear snow and ice from hydrants in their neighbourhoods, even if the hydrant isn’t directly on their property.

Officials say there should be at least a three-foot clearing around the hydrant and a path leading to the street so firefighters can reach it quickly.

Township staff say small efforts from residents can make a major difference, especially during back-to-back storms or periods of heavy accumulation. Clearing hydrants helps firefighters find and connect to the water supply without delay, which can be crucial when dealing with a fast-moving fire.
