Have a dog for a day, OSPCA launches new program

How would you like a dog for a day?

An animal centre in the region is making that a possibility.

The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society York Region Animal Centre are launching a program that not only gives the dogs a break from the shelter, but shows them off to the public in hopes someone will adopt them.

Dog’s Day Out has been modeled after similar programs in the U.S. where the animal centre offers the public the opportunity to take a dog out of the shelter for a little day trip.

They can choose what they want to do with the dog for the day. Whether it’s taking the dog to dog-friendly spots, going for a walk or plenty of belly rubs, there are lots of options.

To attract potential adopters, the dogs will even wear a little ‘Adopt Me’ vest.

The animal centre says the time the dogs get to spend outside of the shelter gives them mental stimulation, stress reduction and the ability to show their true personalities.

“Dog’s Day Out gives dogs a break from the shelter environment and gives the community a simple, meaningful way to help,” says Danielle Johnson, Provincial Operations Manager – GTA, Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. “Even a few hours outside the animal centre can reduce stress, provide valuable behavioural insights, and help dogs connect with potential adopters.”

People interested in participating have to be approved. They need to fill out an application form and once approved, they get carefully matched with a dog most suited to their lifestyle.

“You don’t need a long-term commitment to make a big impact,” adds Johnson. “Sometimes just one afternoon can make a meaningful difference in helping a dog find a loving home.”

The OSPCA says it provides any supplies the dog may need. The centre encourages people to document the day and take lots of photos.

The animal centre says it’s proud to be a Fear Free shelter and that all dog outings should be based on positive reinforcement along with compassionate and non-forceful techniques.

Fear Free is a philosophy of alleviating fear, anxiety and stress in pets.

Dog’s Day Out is currently available at the York Region Animal Centre in Stouffville.
