The town of Gravenhurst is reminding residents that security cameras are rolling at various public sites across the community. In an online post on Friday, the town says it hopes to deter criminal activity with the use of these cameras in addition to being able to offer them as a tool to police if something does happen. “Public safety and the protection of municipal assets are at the core of why we use surveillance cameras,” said Scott Lucas, chief administrative officer of Gravenhurst. “On multiple occasions we have been able to share footage with the Ontario Provincial Police, and this has helped with criminal investigations,” Lucas added. The cameras, however, are not new, having been in town, in some cases, for many years. Town hall, the Gravenhurst Public Library, the Muskoka Wharf and the Gravenhurst Opera House are just some of the many locations around town where residents can spot the security cameras in action. The cameras are not meant to be hidden, the town says, as they are often accompanied by a sign that informs people of their presence in the area. “The presence of surveillance cameras and access to footage is an important tool in police investigations and Bracebridge OPP appreciates the Town of Gravenhurst, both as a partner in crime prevention and in their commitment to improving public safety,” said OPP Insp. Wade Beebe. The town says it has plans to install cameras in new locations in the years ahead.
