With more e-bikes out on roads and pathways throughout Simcoe County and the summer weather here, the OPP Central Region has a few reminders. E-bike riders are to abide by Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act and Ontario regulation. Anyone who rides an e-bike needs to be at least 16 years of age and wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet. They also have to follow the same rules of the road as cyclists and are not allowed to ride on controlled-access highways, like the 400-series highways. E-bikes themselves should meet all Ontario equipment standards. In order for an e-bike to be used legally, it needs to meet certain requirements. That includes being equipped with operating pedals, having two independent braking systems, having the battery and motor securely fastened to the frame and having all electrical terminals properly insulated. The maximum assisted speed should be 32 kilometres per hour, it should have an electric motor rated at 500 watts or less and weigh no more than 120 kilograms, including the battery. People who operate e-bikes don’t need to have a driver’s licence, vehicle registration, licence plates or insurance, unlike motor vehicles. Police urge e-bike riders to be familiar with their municipality’s bylaws or restrictions for where e-bikes can and cannot be used.
