Freezing rain spurs brief Hwy 400 NB lane closures in Oro-Medonte

Freezing rain created icy and dangerous driving conditions on Highway 400 Tuesday night, prompting a closure through Oro-Medonte.

Provincial police say the northbound lanes between Forbes Road and Horseshoe Road was closed shortly after 10 p.m. due to the slick conditions.

“Motorists are advised to slow down and drive with caution,” OPP stated in a social media post at 10:23 p.m.

There was no official word about any collisions, but several social media comments noted multiple vehicles crashed into ditches along the highway.

The lanes reopened to traffic shortly after midnight.

While there are no weather warnings for the area on Wednesday, provincial police remind motorists to drive according to the conditions and take extra time before hitting the road.

“Clear snow and ice from your entire vehicle, including roof, hood, lights, and windows,” OPP stated, adding “Pack an emergency kit with a blanket, food, water, flashlight and phone charger.”

In conclusion, police urge motorists to never get behind the wheel impaired.
