An investigation is underway after a resident of the micro-modular shelter (MMS) for homeless Londoners died early Wednesday afternoon. According to Sgt. Sandasha Bough of the London Police Service, at approximately 12 p.m. on Wednesday officers responded to a death at the shelter on Cheese Factory Road. Bough says the death does not appear to be suspicious in nature, and police are working in collaboration with members of the Chief Coroner’s Office. Deputy City Manager, Social and Health Development Kevin Dickins told CTV News in a written statement, “We are saddened to hear of the individual’s passing. The operator is managing the response and are providing supports to other residents that need it.” Last October, city council approved spending up to $7 million to construct and operate the shelter for homeless Londoners until April 2027. The community opened in February, and includes 60 modular huts (50 single occupancy, 10 double occupancy) that can house up to 70 people. The contracted operator, a company called Xpera, notified the City of London about the death. Dickins says, “The city is working closely, supporting Xpera.” As of last week, the facility was temporarily housing 68 people (plus 11 dogs and three cats), all of whom were previously living unsheltered. It was also announced that the first two residents would be graduating into appropriate housing later this week.
