Flashback to ‘93: Barrie turned blue for Jays’ World Series win

Total News coverage from the 1993 World Series when the Toronto Blue Jays won it all.

In 1993, the City of Barrie, like much all of Canada, came to a standstill as the Toronto Blue Jays chased history. It was the fall that brought an entire nation together under one colour: blue.

Total News, now CTV News, was on the streets covering the excitement as cab drivers tuned into the game over the airwaves and bars across the city were locked in on bulky tube television sets for patrons.

In downtown Barrie, the energy was palpable. At one bar, fans gathered glued to the TVs as the Jays played game one of the series.

“Paul Molitor is my favourite because he’s the best there is,” said one patron, while another added, “Dave Stewart, got to love Steward because he’s just an amazing hitter.”

In the end, Joe Carter would hit his legendary three-run home run to win the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jays fans have held onto that historic win for more than 30 years, but now, their team is making its long-awaited return to the World Series, this time taking on the LA Dodgers.

Businesses across the region are seeing a spike in sales, with Jays gear flying off the shelves.

“There’s not enough to go around,” said MVP Cards and Collectables owner Kevin Lawrence. “Of course, the championship era from before I have a lot of and some lovely Vladdy Guerrero things, but it’s demand has been high and supply has been low.”

Game One of the World Series will be held in Toronto Friday at 8 p.m.
