First responders, hydro crews invited to free show at Casino Rama as thanks for ice storm efforts

Hydro crews work to restore power on Mon., March 31, 2025, following a destructive ice storm in Simcoe County.

Hundreds of first responders, Hydro One, Rama First Nation and emergency personnel who worked tirelessly during this spring’s powerful ice storm will be treated to a musical celebration of Canadian culture later this month.

Casino Rama Resort is offering complimentary tickets to ‘Canadiana - The Musical’ on Sun., May 18, as a gesture of thanks to those who helped restore power, clear debris, and assist residents affected by the storm.

The March 30 ice storm downed trees, damaged properties, and knocked out power to thousands, leaving many in the dark for days, and in some cases, weeks.

“The damage caused by the recent ice storm tested the resilience of our communities and showed that when we come together, anything can be accomplished,” added Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Response Jill Dunlop.

"There’s nothing more Canadian than pitching in to help when you’re neighbours need help," stated Glenn Trickey, with Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Ltd. “It is our pleasure to invite them to enjoy and we welcome all to come.”

Orillia Mayor Don McIsaac acknowledged the significance of the storm, calling it a once-in-a-generation event that tested the community’s strength.

“We are profoundly grateful to our local volunteers, community organizations, and the many partners who stepped forward to assist in our time of need,” McIsaac stated. “Your efforts reflect the true spirit of service and community that defines Orillia.”

The musical - developed by veteran Canadian producer Linus Hand, features a lighthearted story set to a soundtrack of some of the country’s most iconic hits from Canadian legends, including Shania Twain, Tragically Hip, Celine Dion, and Gordon Lightfoot.

Two performances will take place on May 18 at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tickets are now available to the public through Ticketmaster, starting at $35.
