Last laps mark the end of an era for popular racetrack

Sunset Speedway holds final races marking the end of an era.

Engines thundered, tires squealed and the smell of burning rubber hung in the air as Sunset Speedway took its final laps over the weekend.

The Innisfil track, a mainstay for racing fans for decades, closed its gates after one last round of high-octane competition. The stands were filled with fans soaking up the sights and sounds for one last time on Sunday.

Brian and Sandra Todish have owned and operated the speedway for over a decade.

“How do you say goodbye to those folks that I’ve seen every Saturday? So, it’s tough,” said Sandra Todish. “For Sunset, it’s time for that sun to set for us.”

The stands were packed with fans soaking up the sights and sounds one last time, with many calling the racetrack a “very special place.”

“It has been an incredible journey, filled with thrilling races, unforgettable moments, and a sense of camaraderie that we will cherish forever,” a final post on the speedway’s website states.

The racetrack held a special three-day event over the weekend, aptly titled ‘The Last Dance: The End of an Era.’

On Sunday, the final checkered flag waved and the engines quieted as drivers rolled into their final stops.

“It’s been a great, great ride,” concluded Brian Todish.

While development pressures have loomed in the area for years, no official plans have been confirmed for the land’s future.
