Environment Canada confirms third tornado touched down in Huntsville area

Environment Canada has confirmed a third tornado touched down during fierce thunderstorms in Huntsville on August 4^th.

Investigators with the national weather agency confirm the third tornado was an EF-1 tornado. Officials say the tornado was on the ground near Utterson for just over four kilometers and was about 250 metres wide.

Earlier this week Environment Canada had confirmed the first two twisters touched down in the area during the severe storm that swept through the Muskoka region.

The first tornado was an EF-1 tornado and touched down south of Huntsville and moved for 3km north across Fairy Lake, ending at the Deerhurst resort.

The second tornado was stronger, touching down about 15 km north-east of Huntsville. It was on the ground for about 9 km, with wind speeds of up to 190 km per hour. That tornado has been classified as an EF-2 tornado.

The winds also knocked out power to roughly 13,000 Hydro One customers in the area last Friday night.

Environment Canada staff say they estimate 80 to 90 per cent of the forest near where the second tornado touched down has been destroyed.
